How to Vote in 2020

This year you can vote by voting in person at the polls or by absentee ballot. All voters are eligible to vote by absentee ballot in the general election on November 3, 2020 due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • You must fill out an absentee ballot application.
  • Absentee ballot applications will be mailed to every eligible voter between Tuesday, September 8th  and Friday, September 11th.
  • Absentee ballot applications are also available in English and Spanish at
  • All voters are eligible to vote by absentee ballot for the 2020 election by checking the COVID-19 excuse on the application.
  • Return your application promptly because absentee ballots cannot be distributed until October 2nd, according to Connecticut law.
  • The short window between October 2nd and November 3rd makes it especially important to return your application and ballot as soon as possible.
    • Returning the applications and the ballots early will make it easier for the town process all of the applications and the ballots.
  • While you can mail your ballot, Connecticut’s Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is encouraging you to use the secure ballot drop boxes to return absentee ballot applications and the ballot themselves.
    • South Windsor’s ballot drop box is located outside of town hall at 1540 Sullivan Avenue.
  • Connecticut law only allows the counting of ballots that have arrived by the close of polls, 8:00 pm on Election Day, November 3rd.

The Secretary of the State will be mailing all eligible voters an absentee ballot application for the November 3, 2020 election by mid-September. If you wish to vote by absentee ballot please promptly complete the application (check the reason, sign and date) and mail it back to the Town of South Windsor in the provided envelope OR place it in the Official Ballot Box located in front of Town Hall.

If you prefer to download and print the application yourself, please click here to access the Connecticut Secretary of the State's website for an absentee ballot application. The application should be mailed to: Town Clerk of South Windsor, 1540 Sullivan Avenue, South Windsor, CT 06074 OR placed in the Official Ballot Box located in front of Town Hall.

NOTE:  You must complete an application in order to receive a ballot.

Registered voters may request applications and vote using an absentee ballot for one of the following reasons (and for no other reason):

  • Absence from town during all the hours of voting
  • COVID-19 for November 3 Election
  • Illness or Physical Disability
  • Active Service in the armed service
  • Duties as an election official at a polling place
  • Religious tenets conflict on day of election

Ballots will be mailed starting on October 2ndto voters who have completed and returned an Absentee Ballot application.

Please note that if you choose not to vote by Absentee Ballot, voting at the polls will be available on November 3, 2020 from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
