Deputy Mayor Andrew Paterna will replace Mayor Saud Anwar, who was sworn in March 1, 2019, to the General Assembly’s 3rd Senate District seat, after the mayor steps down to focus on his new role.
Saud Anwar will resign as mayor when the Town Council concludes its search for a new town manager to replace Matthew Galligan, who is retiring after more than 23 years of service.
Choosing the next town manager is an important process that Saud said he wants to complete before stepping down as mayor. So he plans to wait to resign as mayor until after voting on the final candidate for that town job.
Andy is excited about assuming the role of mayor and will rely on Saud as a tutor to make the transition.
Once Andy takes over as mayor that would leave a vacant seat on the nine-member Town Council that would need to be filled. Democrats will nominate an appointment for that vacancy, which will be voted on by the entire council.
The transition on the Town Council will take place simultaneously with the selection of a new town manager candidate, officials said. Galligan has said he’ll stay on to help the successful candidate prepare for the role before he retires in May or June.
